Food Talk - Dining by the Riverside - Sample

With summer in full swing, there are many opportunities for a delicious meal served with a picture-perfect view. Enjoy these many Rivertowns spots, which serve everything from crab cakes to craft beer, that dot the coastline of the Hudson River.

Barley on the Hudson

236 Green Street - Tarrytown, NY 10591 — (914) 909-5724

https://www.facebook.com/barleyonthehudson/

Fresh-caught seafood paired with cold drinks and a light breeze coming off the water set the scene at Barley on the Hudson, which also has a full slate of live music in July and August. Wondering what to order? This summer, locals have been snapping up the lobster roll, lamb gyro, and a wicked tuna sandwich.

Half Moon

1 High Street - Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522 — (914) 693-4130

https://www.halfmoonhudson.com/

Come for the drinks and appetizers and stay for the atmosphere. Half Moon juts out on a peninsula along the river and offers spectacular views of the New York City skyline and Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Grab a table and split a few small bites, including yucca and mozzarella, fried oysters, and steak tartar, off the “pintxos” menu.

Harvest on Hudson

1 River Street - Hastings, NY 10706 — (914) 478-2800

https://www.harvesthudson.com/

An elegant and functional greenhouse is now open at Harvest on Hudson as an indoor/outdoor cocktail bar. In the property’s garden, guests can be seated among beds of fragrant herbs and vegetables. The light from the Hudson River bathes the garden in an orange glow at sunset, the perfect time for a sip of the “Stardrop Spritz,” a cocktail that combines tequila, Aperol, watermelon, white peach and bubbles—essentially, summer in a glass.

Hudson Farmer and Fish

11 River Street - Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591 —(914) 631-8380

https://www.farmerandthefish.com/hudson

Tucked away on the Sleepy Hollow riverfront, Hudson Farmer and the Fish provides an intimate dining experience. At dinnertime, paddle boarders and kayakers can be seen bobbing along the coastline, as families meander along the nearby Sleepy Hollow RiverWalk. Seafood lovers will rejoice over the full raw bar, PEI mussels, and a Down East Lobster Roll that is served warm and buttered or “cool” with cucumbers.

Hudson Social

11 Station Plaza - Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522 — (914) 478-3634

 https://hudsonsocial.com

Hudson Social is more than a waterfront restaurant in a great location; the restaurant is housed in the historic Dobbs Ferry train station and is just steps from Waterfront Park. As live music gets going on Thursday nights, the outdoor bar becomes lined with guests, and the patio tables are a big draw on warm days. Owner Matt Kay, who recommends the blackened mahi mahi tacos or country fried chicken sandwich, elevated by Hudson Social’s signature sriracha maple sauce, also highlights the restaurant’s high-quality food and service.

Red Hat on the River

1 Bridge Street - Irvington, NY 10533 —(914) 591-5888

https://redhatontheriver.com/

At Red Hat on the River, diners truly are on the water. The back patio of the Irvington bistro is steps from the river’s edge, making it an idyllic destination for date night or dinner with friends. While taking in the sound of waves gently lapping on the rocks nearby, order Red Hat’s famed steak frites or, for more seasonal fare, try the tuna steak sandwich or lobster salad. For even better views of the river, grab a drink at the restaurant’s rooftop bar.

RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen

127 West Main Street - Tarrytown, NY 10591 —(914) 631-3100

https://rivermarketbarkitchen.com/

“Local” is at the heart of all things RiverMarket, a quiet waterfront spot walkable from the Tarrytown train station, whose Hudson Valley cheese plate includes selections from throughout New York State. The risotto features hand-picked mushrooms from Westchester Mushroom Company, Westchester’s first indoor mushroom farm. Come here for a great meal centered on fresh, seasonal ingredients in a tranquil setting.

Sambal

4 West Main Street - Irvington, New York 10533 —(914) 478-2200 | (914) 478-2700 https://www.sambalny.com/

Sambal is a haven for vegans, vegetarians, and lovers of Thai and Malaysian cuisine. Pad Thai and green curry are fixtures of the restaurant’s newest menu, which also offers dishes such as the Lamb Shank Massaman, slow simmered with diced potatoes, peanuts, and tamarind. On Friday evenings, a DJ brings music and dancing to Sambal’s outdoor patio.

The Sailhouse

238 Green Street -Tarrytown, NY 10591 — (914) 332-0517

https://www.thesailhousetarrytown.com/

The Sailhouse may be new to the Rivertowns, but its owners are not. Co-owner Sean Degnan, who grew up in Irvington, knew that an updated version of fried calamari—the restaurant’s includes jalapeño and a “make it buffalo” option for those feeling spicy—would impress diners at this newly opened bar and restaurant. Visit The Sailhouse at the Washington Irving Boat Club marina for dinner, drinks, live music, or a game of cornhole, all summer long.
